Grooming Tips for Senior Dogs: Gentle Care for Aging Pups

Older dogs still need grooming — arguably more than ever — but the approach has to change with their body.

Shorter sessions, more breaks: Arthritic joints and reduced stamina mean standing for a full session is hard. We work in blocks and let seniors rest or sit when they need to.

Less time standing: Much of the work can be done with the dog lying down or supported on a non-slip surface, which takes pressure off hips and elbows.

Gentler tools and lower heat: Aging skin is thinner and more prone to tearing, and seniors regulate temperature poorly. Cooler dryer settings and soft slicker brushes are the norm.

Watch for lumps and sensitivity: Grooming is a good regular check for new bumps, warts, and sore areas. We'll point out anything new so your vet can look at it.

Nails matter more than ever: Long nails make slipping worse for a dog who already has weak hind legs. Frequent short trims are a real quality-of-life improvement.

Practical trims over show trims: A shorter, easy-care cut with a clean sanitary area keeps a senior comfortable between visits, especially if incontinence is a factor.

Mobile is a big advantage: No car ride, no stairs, no waiting room — the whole appointment happens a few feet from home.

Tell us about your senior's mobility issues, hearing, or vision loss when booking so we can plan the visit around them.
